 History

The Greenhouse opened it’s doors on November 1995 with the assistance of it’s auspice agency, Behavioral Health Services, the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, the Luzerne/Wyoming County MH/MR Office and the United Way.  Initially only the first floor of the clubhouse was utilized; however, within a three year span and much renovation the clubhouse units occupy the two floors of the building.  The basement is also utilized for storage and a thrift shop.

Clubhouse Community

The Greenhouse is comprised of two units on two floors.  The first floor encompasses food service, clerical and maintenance. The Second floor holds the employment, education, administration and maintenance units. The Greenhouse is a small clubhouse and there is often much cross over in the units.  The clubhouse is well known to the community at large.  Members take an active part in two large community events each year; i.e., The Walk for the Mind in May, and the Candlelight Vigil in October.  Members are actively, politically involved and take part in local and national elections.  There are occasional open house nights to educate the public on the clubhouse milieu.  The Greenhouse has also taken part in “Third Friday” which is a community oriented event that involves tours of facilities that encourage local art.  The Greenhouse displays the art work of it’s members through out the clubhouse.  The Director and a member have taken part in radio talk shows in May and October in commemoration of mental health month and mental illness awareness week.
